On the Power of Tree-Depth for Fully Polynomial FPT Algorithms

چکیده
There are many classical problems in P whose time complexities have not been improved over the past decades. Recent studies of “Hardness in P” have revealed that, for several of such problems, the current fastest algorithm is the best possible under some complexity assumptions. To bypass this difficulty, Fomin et al. (SODA 2017) introduced the concept of fully polynomial FPT algorithms. For a problem with the current best time complexity O(n), the goal is to design an algorithm running in kn ′ time for a parameter k and a constant c < c. In this paper, we investigate the complexity of graph problems in P parameterized by treedepth, a graph parameter related to tree-width. We show that a simple divide-and-conquer method can solve many graph problems, including Weighted Matching, Negative Cycle Detection, Minimum Weight Cycle, Replacement Paths, and 2-hop Cover, in O(td · m) time or O(td · (m + n logn)) time, where td is the tree-depth of the input graph. Because any graph of tree-width tw has tree-depth at most (tw + 1) log2 n, our algorithms also run in O(tw · m logn) time or O(tw · (m + n logn) logn) time. These results match or improve the previous best algorithms parameterized by tree-width. Especially, we solve an open problem of fully polynomial FPT algorithm for Weighted Matching parameterized by tree-width posed by Fomin et al.

Parametrized Complexity of Length-Bounded Cuts and Multi-cuts
We show that theMinimal Length-Bounded L-But problem can be computed in linear time with respect to L and the tree-width of the input graph as parameters. In this problem the task is to find a set of edges of a graph such that after removal of this set, the shortest path between two prescribed vertices is at least L long. We derive an FPT algorithm for a more general multi-commodity length boun...
متن کاملSome probabilistic results on width measures of graphs
Fixed parameter tractable (FPT) algorithms run in time f(p(x)) poly(|x|), where f is an arbitrary function of some parameter p of the input x and poly is some polynomial function. Treewidth, branchwidth, cliquewidth, NLC-width, rankwidth, and booleanwidth are parameters often used in the design and analysis of such algorithms for problems on graphs. We show asymptotically almost surely (aas), b...
متن کاملEither/Or: Using Vertex Cover Structure in Designing FPT-Algorithms - The Case of k-Internal Spanning Tree
To determine if a graph has a spanning tree with few leaves is NP-hard. In this paper we study the parametric dual of this problem, k-INTERNAL SPANNING TREE (Does G have a spanning tree with at least k internal vertices?). We give an algorithm running in time O(2 log k · k + k · n). We also give a 2-approximation algorithm for the problem. However, the main contribution of this paper is that we...
متن کاملCompact Suffix Trees Resemble PATRICIA Tries: Limiting Distribution of the Depth
Suffix trees are the most frequently used data structures in algorithms on words. In this paper, we consider the depth of a compact suffix tree, also known as the PAT tree, under some simple probabilistic assumptions. For a biased memoryless source, we prove that the limiting distribution for the depth in a PAT tree is the same as the limiting distribution for the depth in a PATRICIA trie, even...
متن کاملOn the Parameterized Intractability of Monadic Second-Order Logic
One of Courcelle’s celebrated results states that if C is a class of graphs of bounded tree-width, then model-checking for monadic second order logic (MSO2) is fixedparameter tractable (fpt) on C by linear time parameterized algorithms, where the parameter is the tree-width plus the size of the formula. An immediate question is whether this is best possible or whether the result can be extended...
